These are just some of the questions which were addressed in an exciting project that students from Aalto University in Finland carried out on behalf of ABB to envision the challenges our industry is likely to face by the year 2040 and how we might overcome them.

Closing the loop in continuous casting for unrivalled, real-time in-mold control
 
 The ABB Ability™ Optimold Control works in real-time, using feedback from a high resolution sensor system (such as the ABB Ability™ Optimold Monitor) to actively control electromagnetic stirring and/or braking devices which are able to influence fluid flow, correct casting problems in the mold and ensure that casting takes place under optimal conditions. An applcation is available specifically for use in thin slab casting together with the ABB Electromagnetic Brake (EMBR), a well-established product already installed on over 40% of thin slab strands worldwide.
