Mining Update 02/22

eBook: Journey to autonomous mining in 2022 and beyond

Mining is undergoing a radical transformation driven primarily by two disruptive trends: digitalization and sustainability. Both are pushing the boundaries of what was once thought possible in the extractive industries, towards a different way of operating.
Against this backdrop, automation and digitalization are not a luxury, it is a matter of survival.
The journey to autonomous mining demands collaboration and ABB is here to be your partner.

What will you find inside the eBook?
  • The main challenges when automating mines today
  • Tips for setting the basis of modern plant operations
  • Sharing data, remote connectivity and operation
  • The key to make automation projects easier in mining
  • Planning for an automation project
  • Methods and solutions

Next-generation asset performance management as a driver of mining productivity

After a long-standing trend of declining productivity, the mining sector is gradually reversing the course - according to the new analysis by McKinsey. This is because miners are increasingly focusing on extending asset lifecycles, re-examining, and remodelling their processes with a strong focus on digital.

Ben Berwick, Global Portfolio Manager - Asset Performance Management, and Eduardo Ingegneri, Global Product Manager from ABB, explain how digitalization allows miners to generate more value from existing assets without incurring more labour costs.

ABB and Boliden mark 12-year service relationship, one of the longest in the mining industry

ABB is proud to mark a 12-year service relationship for Boliden’s Aitik mine near Gällivare, Sweden, one of the longest in the mining industry. The teams met for a joint steering committee celebration of our long-term service agreement (LTSA) and a factory tour in Switzerland.

Mikael Burck, Head of Electric Division, Boliden Aitik, said: “ABB has collaborated with Boliden from the earliest days of the modern Aitik project and continues to help us on our journey to be in the first position in the world for the electric and connected mine. We can always rely on their services.”

How to reach net-zero emissions?

Many of the world’s largest miners are targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
To reach these targets, mining companies will need to make substantial investments in the electrification of equipment.
In this white paper, ABB takes a deep dive into the practicalities of electrifying mobile mining equipment and, by extension, achieving an all-electric mine.

Mining made better: the hero of the clean energy transition

Electric vehicles, wind turbines, solar panels and other green technologies rely on metals and minerals, and the mines providing these materials are becoming increasingly electric, digital and automated.

Already today, all mining equipment, from mine to port, can be electrified, and ABB is helping mining companies around the world to convert existing mines from being powered by fossil fuel to become all-electric. Once electrified and automated, essential systems can be fully integrated to further optimize operations, from hoists, grinding mills and conveyors, to the large haul trucks used in modern mining operations.
